March 19, 2006 An exciting game
I just want to share with you what led-up to and some highlights about a game I played that kept me sitting on pins and needles. First of all, I do not play very often games that cost more than $2, maybe 1 – 2 times a month. So At Canbet (the older software), in $10 freerolls I won a few times. Then I played a $1 tourney, got second place $15.xx. New site opened, (it is same on same as the “pokerroom” network), I transferred $5 to check it out. Played on 15/30 limit ring – got down to 3. Played again and figured if I make it up to $5.50 I’ll try for what to me is the BIG game. So I did, and got into the game that starts at 1:00am my time PST. (4:00am EST) that has $500 added to the pool, a game I was eyeing for some time.
NOW – I was expecting a somewhat conservative play a “good game”. well what I found was a WILD WILD game. People were going all in everywhere with everything, it was like freeroll or maybe worse. Bad beats were flying everywhere. There were 515 entrants in what seemed no time we were down to about 300. (and this is a $5 buy in, in the middle of the night !!! I’m just stunned and confused about what I see and try to take advantage of it. By the way if anyone has played this tourney before – I would love to know if it is always like this and any theories as to why? So I play only best hands, and others are loose, the bad beats did not get me – and I’m up rather nicely, I’m in first place with about 250 people left (top 70 get paid) I stay on the top for a while, then one fellow, gets way more chips and stays in the lead with me being second – this is more or less steady picture til we get to be about 60 people left. I am just on cloud nine – I made it to the money in the BIG league… lol. Then, me and this big big stack guy end up at the same table, than in no time at all the table has the top 6 chip holders. There is about 50+ people in, and the top 6 are at one table … and still at one table … and still at one table. We all (no clear agreement) start playing so as to do not inflict major damage. If someone has a hand basically does raise once and the rest either fold or everyone keeps on checking and lets the best hand take it. Also any people transferred to the table, are essentially condemned. One of the six is bound to and in a fact does finish them off. There were some exceptions, and the there were some changes on the high stack group members, but still all at the same table. I’m doing good – position varies between 2 and 4.
We are down to 25 peeps. BB is 2000. Then this hand happens – I have AK, the big big stack is BB, I raise (double BB) he pays, I check, he’s raising, I call, he’s raising and so we go till the final card, and I’m down from my 35K to about 15K, the river is a Q, and he had AQ in hand. Needless to say – now I was playing very tight, and I was upset, cause, he did “not play by the rules” and he in a fact had a weaker hand then mine. He did apologize … oh WOW…
On the positive note I did finish 16th out of 515, won $26 and that is not bad I guess for a sharkette in training. And for the most part it was anything but what I expected, it was a wild game with chips flying everywhere… I’m still puzzled by that – it sure made it exciting and entertaining.
April 7, 2006 Here is a scenario that I was in today. It is fairly early in a tourney, BB is 120, my chip position is OK, at about 2500. I get a 10 and jack of hearts. I go in to see the flop. 10 7 6, two of which are diamond. Got top pair I bet double BB. One guy pays (similar stack), turn is a Q of diamond. --- Now I no longer have top pair, there are three diamonds on the board… my turn… here are my driving thoughts … If I stop betting I think I’m inviting a bluff, if I bet I will not lose the biggest part of my stack … so I bet again same 240 and hold my breath, river is a 4 of spades, I bet again … with heart pounding … the other guy folded… thank you lordy …now I can breath again. A very good friend of mine was watching – and I just asked him if he thinks this was too reckless a play (my heart thinks so)… but then what would you do?
April 21, 2006 This is a question that I’m partly amused by, and partly just gets me going. When someone wins and it is a bad beat – then the loser (sometimes) starts harassing – saying things like “how can you pay that” “that is not poker” “this is bingo” “just a lucky moron” and all the other things we all have heard before. Now – when the same person wins - and we all win good hand and bad hands – than what is it then? I hear the word LUCK first spit out as the biggest filth but then we really do want and need luck on our side. So, why do some “curse” the very thing we all WANT. I’m not gonna stand here to say that I do not want to break the computer when I lose a big stack on a bad beat – I SURE DO!. But take a breath or 2 or 10 – the fact is it is not the other guy’s “fault”. Poker is POKER. We all want to win and want it bad or we would not be playing, but cannot lose it all on a bad beat – simply because they are a reality that it SOMETIMES DOES happen! I would love to know your thoughts, feelings when you are part of these happenings!
